Being an Evertonian is not easy. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum (nothing but the best is good enough) is proudly emblazoned on the club crest. But that is clearly not what we are being served up by Chairman Bill Kenwright. Without doubt one of the most loyal of Everton followers, if one of his team takes a kick on the shin during a game, Kenwright feels it too.
Before Saturday’s game against Aston Villa, the most played league fixture in football, The Blue Noses staged a peaceful protest against Kenwright for his lack of ability to sell the club to someone with more financial clout than he has. A wealthy man he is but he doesn’t have the kind of bank balance required to move the club forward. In a time when the likes of Man City and Chelski have seemingly bottomless pockets, Everton are rattling their piggy bank, and rattling at the door of their actual bank and finding nothing. Kenwright announced some time ago that the club was up for sale to the right man or organisation. So why no sale? Is it because his heart is ruling his head and he is waiting for another Evertonian to take bigger kicks on the shin?
The Blue Noses are right and Kenwright must know it. They want an independent body appointed to deal with the sale of Everton, thus taking the decision away from Kenwright who clearly has a pair of blinkers on from nearby Aintree. It must hurt Kenwright dearly and The Blue Noses have been clear in saying that they have nothing personal against him. I’m sure that it must even hurt them a little to take this step against a man who must look like an Everton Mint on the inside.
“Who needs Cantona when we’ve got Barry Horne” is an old terrace chant referring to an Everton player who was nowhere near as good as Cantona. Probably sung when we were getting beaten by Man United! Typical of that famous Scouse humour.
